Poodle Coat Color Genetics Study
I am a PhD student at Stanford in the genetics department, focusing my
research on canine coat color genetics. A major part of my research
pertains to trying to identify the genes that make dogs vary from
white-cream-apricot-dark red. Poodles are one of the main breeds I'm
using for this study. I've been going to dog shows and breeder's
houses to collect DNA samples from their dogs, which I do by swabbing
the inside of the dog's cheek with a q-tip (takes just a few seconds
and the dog usually doesn't mind). Sometimes I also send out "kits"
to breeders that contain the swabs and instructions so that the
breeders can collect samples themselves to send them back to me. My
main goal with this study is to better understand the pigmentation
process, but I also hope that companies such as Vetgen will be able to
use my results to develop genetic tests for breeders. If you have
cream, white, red, or apricot poodles of any size and are interested
in participating in this study, please email me at:
tovia@stanford.edu. I can then send you a kit in the mail so that you
can collect DNA from your dogs and send the swabs back to me. I will
also keep you updated on all results from the study. Thanks so much
for your time!
