Hi Tania:

From the time the puppies were born, this puppy looked red. Her pigment is somewhat different from the apricots. A red usually has a different pigment.

Her father, Robson, is an apricot out of a red mother while her mother is a granddaughter of, Cello, a red. There is plenty of red in the pedigree.

<<<<<<<According to European breeders, including Henrik Hannelius, at least one of the parents should be genetically Red to produce Red offspring, what is your experience ?

This statement has been proven wrong on many accounts, at least in standards, I do not know about the toys and mini's. I have had several reds born out of two apricot parents. Cello was a red from a black mother, Farleys D Lady Winnifred and an apricot father Retniw's O' Danny Boy. (Danny was an apricot and never a red)Winnie's mother was an apricot out of a red sire and Winnie's father was a black out of an apricot mother.

Judy also has had some very nice red puppies out of apricot to apricot breeding that went back to reds.

Another question in Henrik Hannelius statement is; what is meant by "genetically Red ?" Does this mean that the parent is genetically carrying the genes that distinguish red from apricot, or does this mean one parent must be red?

I have seen, in the past, several of Ilsa Konig's Shangri-La red standards born to two apricot parents. We had a very long conversation the last time I was at her home, about this subject. She had told me that she had a hard time believing she was producing red puppies from apricot parents until it was repeated several times. She too was once under the belief that she needed a red parent.

From what I have seen in my own breeding program as well as other standard breeders related to this line, this is why I truly believe that your puppy is red.

Terry
