The red fawn coat is of a deep, warm shade, close to that of mahogany. The coat is solid red, without becoming paler on the inclined parts of the body. The Irish Red Setter is a particularly notable example. The dark fawn is characterised by a dark colour but, even though it can tend to red, it never achieves the warm shade of red fawn. It always appears duller, even in short coated dogs. Lightening can be observed on the inclined parts of the animal, making these regions appear less pronounced in colour. The orange fawn class comprises all the intermediary shades between dark and pale. They are characterised by an overall golden yellow colour, which explains the very evocative traditional names used to describe such coats (golden..) encountered, for example, in Cockers, Brittany Spaniels, Blenheims, Golden Retrievers, etc.. As in the previous case, the coat can be a lighter colour on the inclined parts of the body; these can be pale fawn. The colour observed in a pale fawn coat is light and corresponds to a yellow without any darker shade whatsoever. It is characterised by a blonde colour which is commonly called lemon, wheaten and also yellow. It is observed in Labradors for example. The colour of the nose can vary in fawn coats: sometimes it is fawn (seen as reddish), but it can also be black, brown, blue or even beige. Comments The variations in shade, from red fawn to pale fawn, are primarily due to polygenic effects..... _______________________________________
